These festive and fun cupcakes feature a rich chocolate base, filled with smooth ganache, and topped with a swirl of cream cheese frosting decorated like Christmas lights. Easy to make and decorate, they’re perfect for holiday parties!


✅️ Ingredients

Cupcakes:


2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (350g) ๐Ÿž

2 1/4 cups sugar (450g) ๐Ÿฌ

1 1/4 cups cocoa powder (100g) ๐Ÿซ

1 tsp baking soda ๐Ÿง

3/4 tsp salt ๐Ÿง‚

1 cup unsalted butter, softened (16T/250g) ๐Ÿงˆ

4 large eggs, at room temperature ๐Ÿฅš

1 1/2 cups buttermilk (350mL) ๐Ÿฅ›

2 tsp vanilla extract ๐Ÿฆ

Frosting:


8 oz cream cheese, softened ๐Ÿง€

16 tbsp (2 sticks) butter, softened ๐Ÿงˆ

6-7 cups powdered sugar ๐Ÿš

2-4 tbsp milk ๐Ÿฅ›

1 tbsp clear vanilla extract ๐Ÿฆ

1/4 tsp salt (if using unsalted butter) ๐Ÿง‚

3-5 drops black gel food color (Americolor Super Black) ๐ŸŒ‘

Ganache Filling:


6 oz semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup) ๐Ÿซ

6 oz heavy whipping cream (¾ cup) ๐Ÿงด

๐Ÿ›‘ Decoration:


1 large bag of M&Ms (red/green Christmas M&Ms work well!) ๐Ÿฌ

✔️ Instructions

1️⃣ Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C) or 325°F (160°C) for convection. Line 24 muffin tins with cupcake liners. In a stand mixer, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Add softened butter until incorporated into the dry ingredients. Whisk together eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Add to the dry mix and blend until smooth.


2️⃣ Baking: Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full (don’t overfill). Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.


3️⃣ Ganache: Microwave chocolate chips and heavy cream in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth. Let cool until it’s soft enough to pipe into the cupcakes.


4️⃣ Frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter together. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until thick. Add vanilla and salt. Stir in black gel food color for the Christmas light “wires.”


5️⃣ Core the Cupcakes: Once cooled, core the center of each cupcake using a cupcake corer, piping tip, or plastic knife. Pipe ganache into the center of each.


6️⃣ Decorate: Pipe a swirl of white frosting onto each cupcake using a large star tip. Add a swirl of black frosting with a small round tip to resemble Christmas light wiring. Top with M&Ms to represent the light bulbs.
